It has the standard 30 buttons and is a Wheatstone fingering pattern. As you can see, it is curly maple. If you see it in person, the pattern seems to move when you look at it from different angles.. It has hybrid reeds. The whole instrument seems not to have been used very much because it is hard (if not impossible) to find any scratches on it. The seven-fold bellows is in excellent shame and is airtight. It comes with the case as shown in the photo above. Please email me for more details etc at frankedgley@gmail.com

frank edgleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08561095229617539936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769948505168480318.post-84942631226141901182023-09-15T08:21:00.000-07:002023-09-15T08:21:42.805-07:00
The Edgley Concertina

What makes these concertinas some of the best?

1/ Solid construction. This is in the design and materials. I have recently seen and played the first instrument I ever made over 20 years ago. The concertina was in good shape, except it needed a bit of tuning.

2/ The Button Action. There is no concertina made, no matter how expensive which is faster or quieter than the Edgley Concertina. Unlike other concertinas, it will not develop bothersome clicks when played in a vigourous manner. With other makes, the rivets eventually wear creating some looseness. This wear causes the "clicking sound" that many players find irritating. I have even heard this on CD recordings of some of the greatest players. This will never happen on an Edgley concertina.

3/ Pad replacement. All concertinas will need the pads replaced eventually. They compress and get thinner from the pressure on them, over time. The problem is that you may not get replacement pads which are the same thickness as the originals. This is a problem! If the replacement pads are thinner than the originals, the buttons will stick up higher and may even pop out of the guide holes underneath the buttons. If the replacement pads are thicker than the original pads, the pads will not lift off the holes sufficiently, affecting the tone or volume. The fulcrums on Edgley Concertinas are threaded into the action board at 64 threads per inch. If the replacement pads are thicker than the originals, simply back off the fulcrum one or two turns. If the pads are thinner than the originals, screw the fulcrums down one or two turns. This is way better than bending the arms which could be disastrous!

4/ Fastening. You may have noticed that all Edgley concertinas have the endbolts (screws) in the corners instead of the middle of the flat edges. (the flats) This, also is for a very good reason. Over time, the pressure of the screws in the centre of the flats can cause leaks at the corners due to the pressure on the centre of the flats, causing leaks at the corners. New gasketing can help, but often not enough and the concertina will be more difficult to play as air leaks out at the corners. I have seen this many times when I used to do repairs on antique instruments This type of leak never happens with the end bolts at the corners.

5/ Grills. Instead of the grills being made of nickel silver, Edgley Concertina grills are made with polished stainless steel grills. All it takes as a piece of cloth to remove and fingerprints, if you can even notice them. Other makers use nickel silver which contains NO silver. This nickel silver material is easier to work with initially, but the acid from your fingertips causes a type of corrosion which at the very least causes the grills to turn grey. This cannot be just wiped off, and is very difficult to get it back to a shine.

6/ Reeds. We use the best reeds available. Yes, we could make our own, but the learning process would take years, and the customer would have to take an inferior sounding instrument until the craft was mastered. I have heard and played early concertinas made by well known and respected concertina makers of today. Either the tone, or response would not be considered the best as of today, Instead we purchase the best quality reeds from reed makers who have been making reeds for many decades. This is their only business and can focus on the most important thing.....tone and response.

7/ We make concertinas with concertina reeds and also those using accordion type reeds. Some maker of concertinas using accordion-style reeds just screw them down onto the reedpan. This affects the tone, and could contribute to a loss of air pressure getting to the reeds. Even worse, some makers just use melted wax to hold down the reeds. This could be a problem if the concertina is left in a hot car. It also makes them more difficult to work on the reeds for tuning or adjustment. the reeds must be cut out and the wax remelted to reinstall them. All our reeds are screwed down to the reedpan with leather gasketing for better tone air-tightness and easy removal and replacement.

7/ Experience. I have over 40 years of experience with concertinas. Twenty years repairing and over 20 additional years making. We at Edgley Concertinas always strive to make the best concertinas we can!

frank edgleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08561095229617539936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769948505168480318.post-54269330403642601052023-09-15T07:22:00.004-07:002023-09-15T07:22:53.318-07:00
THUMBSCREWS

I have had made up extra brass thumbscrews for my concertinas. I have extra sets available for anyone who needs them for repairs etc. These will come with stainless threaded inserts so repairers don't have to worry if they will fit older antique instruments they are restoring. Solid Brass, modeled after traditional thumbscrews. They can be in the mail in a day or two after ordering. two ground-breaking features: (1) Brass reed frames. Brass conducts the tone
more effectively. (2) Real Concertina reed tongues. Concertina reed tongues
ensure that these New Model concertinas will have genuine concertina tone.
Accordion-reeded concertinas have differently shaped reed tongues and slightly
different harmonics which can be very nice, but different than that of
concertina-reeded instruments. Our New Model Concertinas have genuine
concertina reed tongues and brass reed frames, With the New Model Concertina it’s the sound, the lightening fast response and the sound!

have been asked to find this Heritage Concertina a new home. It is
number 413. It is genuine ebony, and is a Jefferies system C/G. The
bellows are in excellent condition, and, in fact. it has bright bellows
papers. As with all Edgley Heritage Concertinas, the action is as fast
and easy as anyone could want. It has also been equipped with new straps fairly recently. It has a strong concertina tone, and uses English-style concertina reeds
set into a Wheatstone-style radial reedpans. These stainless grills are
well polished, and should remain so indefinitely. The buttons are
comfortable on the fingers and are made to play quietly with the use of
woven felt button bushings and dampers. It comes with a "Fallon Case."

A former customer contacted me recently about selling his Heritage Concertina # 403. When I received it, I was very pleased! it plays extremely well with a good, solid "concertina tone." To be completely honest with you, I really considered keeping it for myself and buying it without posting it, here. It is ebony with bloodwood trim, and has a seven deep fold very airtight bellows. However, I do have a personal Heritage instrument of my own. I'm supposed to be a maker, not a collector. To be very honest with you, I would put this instrument up against any other maker's instrument, it plays and sounds that good! Please contact me at frankedgley@gmail.com or fedgley@cogeco.ca, or call me at 519-991-3100.

I am pleased to announce that this concertina has found a new home!

frank edgleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08561095229617539936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769948505168480318.post-10136503288230765082022-10-17T10:57:00.000-07:002022-10-17T10:57:06.377-07:00
Testimonial from a Long-Ago and "New Customer"

#589 arrived safe and sound in our home - this beauty (Professional Model with yellow box eucalyptus burl and bloodwood ends isn't "mine", but my 17-year-old daughter's... thankfully she shares!

My old box is Frank's #4, made a good 22 years ago. It had replaced a
wheezy Renelli and I remember it as an absolute godsend. Years went on,
and oddly my little girl wanted to play concertina too - I thought it
might just be a phase, but no, she took to it
with the same crazy desire that can't be denied. And then of course, we
needed another concertina; yea! Frank and Gwen, to my absolute delight,
are still making concertinas so many years later. There's something
really quite special in seeing craftmanship
carry on, incrementally tweaked and improved on, and rare that we get
experience an end product so real and fine these days.

This new #589 has completely seduced us. I'll start playing it, and just
get carried away with the tune because it's so easy play! The
expression that comes from its responsive button action and soft bellows
feels no different than singing from my own lungs.
And the speed - my daughter said, "My
brain can hardly keep up with the speed of the buttons! ". I really
don't think you have to 'break in' this concertina either, it
plays like it has been in our hands forever already.

My fingers are stiffer than years before; I
had become lazy and left many triplets out, or just lamely glanced off
the buttons anymore. But this box doesn't let me do that. Every single
button gently touched responds like it's reading
my mind and all of a sudden I'm playing so much better and wondering, "Was that me playing?! I thought I couldn't do that anymore...".

With two Edgley's in the house now, we can
play together like never before. My daughter used to kindly use the
wheezy Renelli because she was much better at compensating than I was.
But with the addition of this new Edgley, we can
let it fly - what a wild feeling. They sound different too, #4 is
louder, a more brassy tone that keeps things light, lively and awake.
#589 has a sweet, mellow tone, smooth like honey; an earthy richness
much like my grandpa's harmonica - sure warms a room
up.

Often, I just like to watch her play, and find myself saying over and over, "My God that's a beautiful instrument...".

frank edgleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08561095229617539936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769948505168480318.post-62499223595939249102022-05-19T08:00:00.001-07:002022-05-19T08:00:57.562-07:00
Heritage Concertina for Sale

I have a Heritage Concertina for sale. However, it has slowed down production. Please be advised that, if you intend to place an order, the completion date will probably be longer than anticipated. Considering, though, that these are hand-made instruments, the waiting period is probably not longer that other makers of hand-crafted instruments. With vaccinations in progress, we should be able to resume a normal production schedule in the not-too-distant future. Also, If you would like to order an instrument, please allow us to send you a Pay Pal invoice for the deposit. If you want to send a personal cheque, please note that the company name is now "Edgley Concertinas."

frank edgleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08561095229617539936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769948505168480318.post-24884221476591313792021-03-11T06:20:00.002-08:002021-03-11T06:20:41.165-08:00

A LETTER FROM IRELAND

I have recently bought two vintage concertinas, a Lachenal and

This is one of those times. The owner received it new from us three years ago. A year after, there was a back and arm injury which prevented her from playing. She finally decided to sell her, concertina: "Fair journey, concertina. You were a pleasure to play, and will bring joy to a more gifted player than I," said the owner in an email. This concertina is made of a very smart, figured wood, with Wheatstone fingering. Before shipping I will do a touch up tuning, but little is needed. As standard with our instruments, it has polished stainless grills, and seven fold bellows, and yes, you might be able to see from the photo, matching handles. Before we started making instruments, the founder, Frank Edgley, repaired and tuned vintage concertinas like Wheatstone, Lachenal, Jones, Jeffries and Crabb for 20 years more. Frank Edgley and Harold Herrington collaborated on their early designs, but eventually developed their own signature way of making concertinas. Edgley Concertinas uses the best quality "Hand-Made" reeds available from Italy for the Session Box, Performers and Professional Models. The quality of all these instruments is the same....the best we can make it, no exceptions, as all our instruments are made in Canada, one at a time, and are all hand-crafted. Our action mechanism is unique and the quietest of any concertina made. Further, it will NOT develop a "clicking sound" as most other instruments do when the rivets develop wear. Our mechanism is also the fastest by our design's ability to reduce the friction which Wheatstones, Jeffries and other actions of their type suffer from. It is also far superior to Lachenal action which is notoriously noisy when trying to play fast tunes. We recently (2019) had the experience of seeing our first concertina made over 20 years previous. It had no problems other than it could have used a bit of a tuning, and is still playing today. Edgley Concertinas are well-built to a very sturdy design. As part of our custom service, customers can specify the wood they would like; a contrasting wood trim; trim on the handles. We offer wooden ends or stainless steel ends, which will not corrode or discolour. With the aforementioned models, the Italian reeds are screwed down to the reedpan, NOT waxed in, and we use a leather gasket under each reed for tone purposes and to ensure an airtight fit. This makes it very easy for dust removal, and the eventual touch up re-tune. (in 5 or 6 years depending how hard it is played.) On all our bellows we use SEVEN folds ensuring that it is quite unlikely that you should run out of air. With our Professional Models we install what we call the "angled reedpans" which are unique to Edgley Concertinas, and provide our Professional Models with the most refined tone of any concertina using Italian reeds.

About 10 years ago we began our Heritage Model. These are concertinas using traditional concertina reeds. This is a completely different design within the instrument, with single reeds per reed frame (Italian reeds have two reed tongues per frame). These reed frames are tapered and bevelled to a five degree angle, and are fitted into the hardwood reed pan. On some traditional concertina reed pans, like Lachenal instruments, and some others, the reed pans can warp over time and this is not a good thing and very difficult to remedy. We use a different wood than any other maker. This wood does not warp, and is proprietary to Edgley Concertinas. It also provides a very good tone.

We stand by our concertinas, as we have since we began the business, but have had very few concertinas returned for repair or modification. If you are interested in acquiring an heirloom quality concertina that you can pass on or resell at a good price, please contact Frank Edgley at fedgley@cogeco.ca , Ph. 519-991-3100, or Gwyneth Edgley at gwen.edgley@gmail.com. I believe there is no one making concertinas with as much experience as we do. Mexican Bocote Heritage Concertina

This is the latest concertina to be completed at Edgley Concertinas. It is made from a very beautiful Mexican Bocote with an ebony trim. As with all our concertinas, we do not use thin veneers, but cut the wood from the stock wood we have in the shop. There are seven fold bellows covered in leather and with stainless grills. Wooden end grills are also available. All Heritage models have English-style reeds fitted into a traditional radial reedpan similar to those made by Wheatstone, in the early 20th Century. Our concertinas have whisper quiet action, because of our unique mechanism design and use of felt bushings and dampers. May 2020.
